My TV Bests (for the record)
I’ve done a lot of griping about Top 10 lists and wish everyone would just stop doing them. But the biggest part of my disdain for them is the fact that, everyone does these lists, they are everywhere now, and every critic’s list is 80 percent the same as every other critics list.
It’s part of the umbrella problem that I’ve discussed here before, Rushfield’s Twitter Paradox: Never in history have their been more voices empowered to speak. Never has their been more conformity in what’s said.
(Reason spoiler: Because nature can’t in the end stand a cacophony. People are cowards. So the loudest voices eventually cow the the quieter ones and the mass becomes a mob, frequently a lynch mob.)
Anyway, so as much as I hate lists per se, I’m also criticizing people for the specifics of their lists, so I felt obliged to put up or shut up with mine.
So here it is. My stupid Ten Best TV Shows of 2013. I made this up for the Hitfix critics poll. Looking it over, it’s not as wildly idiosyncratic as I might dream my list would be. But its mine. I can’t help giving Breaking Bad the nod, as much as I’d like to not endorse the mob sentiment, but damn it, like it I did. Cliche though I might be.
So here’s my best lists and my new shows list. They asked for 2. So otherwise some of these shows in the new shows list (Amy Schumer in partic) would be in my best..but I knew I had that second list, so I could save a slot… Lists!
