Was driving home tonight and this came on. Was going to turn it off just because I didn’t want to go there emotionally. But then I said, aww, what the hell. I’m in a good mood tonight. Ol’ Townes Van Zandt isn’t going to ruin it for me. But by gum, just like every time, the damn song sucked me in and, just like every time, like clockwork, when he got to “And now he’s growing old” I choked so hard I nearly let out a scream and had to pull over the car. Pancho and Lefty is our Danny Boy.
Is there a more evocative line in all of American song than “the dust that Pancho bit down south, ended up in Lefty’s mouth.”?
Haunting, I tell you.
