It has come to this. The final two Oscar films debuted for the Oscar pundits last weekend and both were declared instant, unstoppable winners. Both Les Mis and Zero Dark Thirty we said to be so great that nothing can prevent either one of them from winning the best picture trophy. And this in a race where Argo and Lincoln are both already certain to win best picture. And Silver Linings or Life of Pi very well might win Best Picture.
So many decent nominees in the race! This has never happened before. Normally by this point there is one so-so movie that seems inevitable to win and you’re accepting that that is okay, because its better than all the awful movies that are in the hunt winning, and you’ve given up hope by now on something actually great winning. But not this year. I have seen 5 of the 6 serious contenders and liked them all (although some better than others.) And the one I haven’t seen - Les Mis - I’ve already declared my all time favorite movie sight unseen.
Or maybe I’m just getting old.
Anyhow, I’ve written up this whole mishegas over at Buzzfeed and if you have any concern with being an educated citizen in this cultural universe, you should get over there and educate yourself right now. This is history playing out before your eyes.
